Grades 1 and 2
Teacher - Jana Rosenstein
Well, the 1st and 2nd grade students had the idea that if they created snow projects, the snow might just fall! So after making snowmen for our windows, silly penguins playing on ice, snowman portraits for the halls and “pawprints in the snow” paintings, the snow outside DID fall…and stuck to the ground for the first time this wild winter season!
Science
This winter weather pattern has been great for our science unit on Weather. We have had the opportunity to feel temperatures as high as 48 degrees and as low as 20 degrees all within a week or so! We forecasted and observed sunny blue skies and cold, blistery windy days. We will soon be learning all about the water cycle by using fun songs, experiments and projects.
English
Weather conditions haven’t been the only reporting the first and second grade students have been busy and having fun with! They just completed they second quarter book report and it was quite a hit! The students read a book of their choice, picked out the main character, and wrote a “Who Am I?” riddle about that character. After attaching it to a headband the students read their riddles for their classmates to guess. We became interested in characters from new books and some characters from familiar books such as the Very Busy Spider, Tacky the Penguin, and Duck from Duck for President. Thank you for sharing your book with your classmates, First and Second Graders!
Social Studies
Important people have been a topic of our Social Studies lessons recently as we learned about Martin Luther King Jr. We learned how he worked hard for equality and taught others how to stand up for what they believed in. We read many stories that told about his courageous life from his birth to his death. Studying MLK also brought us to read and learn about Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges. We learned about Rosa Parks’ bravery and how one person can make a difference. We talked about what fair and unfair means and rules that would be fair for everyone and rules that would give some people an unfair advantage. Ruby Bridges was our favorite to learn about because she was about our age when she showed great bravery. She also prayed every day walking to and from school that God would forgive those people for saying bad things just like God forgave the people who said terrible things about Him. She not only taught us more about civil rights, but also how to talk to God in prayer when you are scared and worried, and also reinforced what God has taught us about forgiving one another, just as we have been forgiven.
