Classroom Highlights

Thank you for all the teacher appreciation gifts.  I am very thankful for my 5th and 6th graders and our Immanuel family.

English
Students continued to read "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry. In it, a Danish family hides a Jewish girl from the Nazis. The students are enjoying the book and learning what it means to be a true friend.

Computers
Students have been using their research skills to gain information about the new e-book technology.  They have been looking at how it works, what the costs are, and even forming some opinions if they think this is the wave of the future.  The class was asked to write an informative essay about the information they collected.

Bible Class
Bible class is now in the Promised Land! We are learning about the repentance of the Israelites and God's forgiveness.

Math
Math topics have been wide spread this last month from 2 digit division, estimation, percents, and reducing fractions to ratios.  Keep studying and correcting those math papers.

Health
We are on our final unit in health class discussing our nervous system, our brains, eyes, fingernails, and our skin.   Did you know that our hair is dead? And that our nails really don’t grow very fast?  Fascinating.

Social Studies
Social Studies have brought us so many neat and exciting topics especially the Revolutionary War.  The United States and its founders are so interesting to learn about.  We even had the opportunity to research a state and make a cool pamphlet to share our research.  Everyone did a good job and I look forward to more research projects next year.

Science
We are currently working on animals.  The frogs for dissection are on order and should be arriving next week.  We will start with some science lab safety and a simulation of the dissection.  Then we will get out the specimens and start to explore the anatomy of the Leopard frog.

Gym
I am so proud of how everyone did at track and field at Howard’s Grove High School.  The weather was sunny, but it was a bit windy and cool.  Thank goodness for our camp behind the bleacher wall! That kept us warm and away from the wind.  Keep up the training for next year!

Art
Students took their art tests on Monet and Van Gogh and scored excellent grades! They found the successes and tragedies in the lives of these two artists quite interesting.  Please look at their interpretations of Van Gogh's "Starry Night" by the gym window.  Now they are studying the glass designs of Frank Lloyd Wright.  The clean geometric lines Wright used are being reproduced in the students' own creations.

Spanish
The whole school got together for a Cinco de Mayo fiesta!  We had walking tacos for lunch and played Loteria! (Spanish bingo).  We also did the “Mexican Hat Dance”, had a piñata (thanks Mrs. Stelter), and ran a Mexican hat relay race.  It was so much fun for all of us to get together to share in this event. Students are concentrating on affirmative and negative words and using adjectives as nouns. Students are also using Spanish dictionaries to find out more words for food.  They are doing a report on a Spanish speaking country in either Central or South America.
