Classroom Highlights

Religion
Students are learning about the leadership of Joshua, the help of God fearing judges such as Deborah, and the calling of Gideon to defeat Israel’s enemies.

Science
We have been learning about Fossil Fuels.  There are many pros and cons to using Fossil Fuels.  We have also discussed alternative fuel sources.  This has been a very interesting chapter with lots o f opportunities to talk about conserving our planet.

Computers
The class has been working on their typing skills using Ultra Key.  We have been typing spelling words, essays, poems, and much more.  Several groups had the opportunity to learn the format of friendly letters and type several different varieties.

Language Arts
We have had the opportunity to work on several short stories throughout the year.  We will now be turning our attention to reading a full novel entitled Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.  We look forward to having some great conversations about our new book.

Art
The class has been about Grandma Moses.  They were shocked to learn that this farming grandma didn’t start painting until the age of 76 and became famous by age 80.  They created winter scenes in the same primitive folk style as Grandma Moses

History
Students have or are studying and learning about our neighbors to the north, Canada.

Math
Students have been working with division of decimals, taking fractions and turning them into decimals, adding and subtracting uncommon fractions by turning them into common denominators, multiplying 3 digit numbers by 3 digit numbers and figuring out sales tax and final price.

Music
A huge "Thank You" goes out to everyone who helped make the Christmas Program a success!!  We look forward now to spring and the Music Fest in March.  The 5-8th grade choir will be going to music fest and singing a song or two as a group.  Students are also encouraged to sing solos, duets, trios, or perform with their musical instruments!

Spanish
Our class is learning about weather and reviewing seasons and months of the year.
