Classroom Highlights

This week students spent time setting up for the rummage sale that was held on Saturday, May 15. Thanks to all of you who donated and shopped to help us raise money for the class trip in June!

Math
Well, after our Algebra Unit, the students have really mastered the art of solving an equation.  We have even moved on to solving and equation in order to solve an expression.  Great Work!  Students will complete over 100 lessons this year in Math.  The Saxon Math curriculum does a great job of introducing, practicing and then practicing skills again.  This is called the scaffolding method.  The students have done a very nice job with this and will continue to learn and reinforce skills through May.

Computers
Students have been using their research skills to gain information about the new e-book technology.  They have been looking at how it works, what the costs are, and even forming some opinions if they think this is the wave of the future.  The class was asked to write a persuasive essay convincing the audience of their opinion about e-books.

Science
We are currently working on animals.  The frogs for dissection are on order and should be arriving next week.  We will start with some science lab safety and a simulation of the dissection.  Then we will get out the specimens and start to explore the anatomy of the Leopard frog.

Health
We have completed our unit on respiration and excretion, and will be finishing up our last “Choices” magazine before touching on various health issues to round out the year.

Art
Students continue working on their masks.

Spanish
The whole school got together for a Cinco de Mayo fiesta!  We had walking tacos for lunch and played Loteria! (Spanish bingo).  We also did the “Mexican Hat Dance”, had a piñata (thanks Mrs. Stelter), and ran a Mexican hat relay race.  It was so much fun for all of us to get together to share in this event. Students are concentrating on affirmative and negative words and using adjectives as nouns. We will finish out the year learning vocabulary for places to go.
